2008 Virgin Islands Winemakers Dinners
Seven Great Winemakers & Twelve World Class Chefs at Eight Virgin Islands Hideaways Cook up a Unique Wine and Culinary Experience
2008 Winemakers Dinners - a roaring success During the course of the 2008 Winemakers Dinners, the twelve visiting chefs with the assistance of the four hosting chefs prepared 2,420 dishes between 55 unique courses of gourmet meals that were served to 358 people over eight consecutive days ending on Saturday, August 2nd at eight very special locations throughout the British Virgin Islands. All the dinners were sold out and there was a waiting list for each dinner. The 2008 Winemakers Dinners were kicked off with a VIP Reception hosted by the Co-Chairs of the BVI Charitable Fund, the Premier, the Hon. Ralph T. O¹Neal, OBE and Ajit Mathew George, Managing Director of Nail Bay Resort at the historic Sugar Mill Ruins at Nail Bay on Friday, July 25th and was attended by over 250 people who feasted on the five distinct culinary tastes of the United States that were prepared by the School of Culinary Arts at Kendall College, Chicago. The seven visiting winemakers from Germany and Italy poured 888 bottles of wines to the 608 people who collectively attended the VIP Reception and the eight dinners plus all the chefs and support staff. According to Ajit George, this first year event attracted a record $106,000 from 32 sponsors. An additional $ 31,495 was raised from a silent wine auction that was held at each of the eight wine dinners from the sale of 166 bottles that were primarily donated by the winemakers. The highest bid of $2,150 was for a single magnum bottle of the rare 2006 Fritz Haag Riesling Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Beerenauslese Magnum. An additional $2,517 was raised from bidders for wines that were specially bottled for the 2008 Winemakers Dinners. All in all, the 2008 Winemakers Dinners grossed $140,000 for the BVI Charitable Fund. The net proceeds from these dinners will be distributed to the BVI Red Cross, St. George¹s School, Tortola; and St.Mary¹s School, Virgin Gorda. The BVI Charitable Fund was started in March2008 with a $25,000 challenge grant from Nail Bay Resort.
