Following the course of the Adige river into southern Trentino, you will reach Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga, at San Leonardo in Sarnis. Born in 1978, Anselmo is nearly 800 years younger than the estate winery him and his family have operated since the 18th century. The history of the winery, which dates back to 1215, is evident in the museums, artifacts, and traditions of this original winery. San Leonardo's wines have won multiple awards, including the 1995 Tenuta San Leonardo, which Wine Spectator calls a "monster of a red" (at 93 points) and is a bordeux-style blend from all vines at San Leonardo. Or the 1999 Tenuta San Leonardo Vallagrina; full-bodied, with pepper, berry, currant and fresh herbs, medium fine tannins and a long finish.
Anselmo always had a passion for the country side, and after studying Business Administration travelled to Rome, London… as far as South Africa, learning in different cellars and eventually returning to the family business in 2001. Despite course work in wine making and wine tasting, he still maintains working in the estate is where you learn the most.
“Wine making is not only a passion, it’s a life style; the quiet and peaceful mountains of Trentino are a splendid area to escape modern life, and distributing our wines in over 40 countries world wide gives me the opportunity to be always updated with what is going on around the globe.”
The estate boasts almost 300 hectares, including fields, forests and vineyards. “The soil is our work’s soul”, is the motto of the estate, “and it is also my soul.”
