Chef Albert Kramer accepted a special invitation of the Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE, Premier of the British Virgin Islands to return to the BVI. Chef Kramer is well known as the first Executive Chef of Little Bay Resort when Laurance Rockefeller opened it in 1964. In 1966, Chef Kramer became the first developer of Nail Bay Resort before he left the BVI in 1967.
Chef Albert Kramer was born in St. Gallen, Switzerland, in 1935 and after schooling and three years apprenticeship took his first position as a line cook in Switzerland in 1954. From there, Chef Kramer travelled abroad to work in Canada, at the famous Chateau Frontenac Hotel in Quebec City where he met his wife Isabelle, and stayed for a number of years.
Chef Kramer’s first position in the Caribbean came in 1959 as Executive Chef at Cotton Bay Golf and Country Club in the Bahamas, where he stayed for 3 years. Upon the opening of Little Dix Bay, Virgin Gorda in 1963, Chef Kramer chose his final Caribbean destination. During his four years at Little Dix, Chef Kramer prepared the reception in honor of Her Majesty the Queen during her visit to Virgin Gorda in 1966.
From 1967 and for the next ten years, Kramer was the Executive Chef across many properties in the Hyatt and Hilton hotel chains, and managed many high-end restaurants in the United States for five years following. In 1985, he tried his hand at his own restaurant: Gerards French Restaurant, in Cornville, Arizona. In 1991, he opened a second restaurant titled Manzanita, in Cornville, AZ, and was highly regarded in each of Forbes Restaurant Survey, the AAA Award, and the 101 Best Restaurants in Arizona.
Chef Kramer retired in 2007 and is now doing private Chef endeavors as a Personal Chef and Gourmet Consultant. He has served on the Academy of Chefs and Chaine des Rotisseurs, and was the President of Northern Arizona Chapter – American Culinary Federation. These dinners are part of a special homecoming for Chef Kramer who is coming back to Virgin Gorda after all these years. |
